The Mani Ratnam-Santosh Sivan combination never fails to work cinematographic magic. This may be a movie about terrorism, but it works as much like a tourism advertisement for Himachal Pradesh and Kerala.
Raavan
Mani Ratnam and Santosh Sivan again. This unconventional take on the ancient epic stars the Athirapally Falls in Kerala, along with parts of Karnataka and Ooty. There are also some lovely images of Mahabaleshwar and the Malshej Ghats.
Highway
In this road movie about the bond between a gangster and the girl he kidnaps, director Imtiaz Ali takes us on a journey across North India, from the highways of Delhi and Rajasthan to Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. In one scene, the hostage says she doesn’t want the journey to end. You feel the same way.
Lootera
Shot extensively near Kolkata and Dalhousie, this period romance about a conman who pretends to be an archaeologist in order to steal some valuable antiques is a masterclass in how to make each achingly beautiful frame speak.
