Big-budget South Indian films have had a solid hold with their pan-India releases in domestic markets, but Shah Rukh Khan is definitely the ultimate superstar when it comes to box office numbers, and his upcoming film King is proof of the same. The film’s overseas theatrical rights have been acquired for a whopping Rs 175 crore, and that’s a new record for Indian cinema, as it proves the global appeal that the actor has and the loyalty his international fans have.
Phars Films acquires Shah Rukh Khan’s King’s overseas rights
As per a Pinkvilla report, Phars Films has secured King’s overseas distribution rights at a staggering Rs 175 crore, which is over $18 million. So far, Yash Raj Films has handled the international release for SRK’s films, including Pathaan as well as Jawan.

Bollywood movies are MOSTLY released on commission basis. This includes overseas too. BUT here, Phars has purchased #KING at a record price.
Record here means an actual record. No MG deal has ever seen a 100 crores [for overseas rights] and this one is on some other level only.
Now the good news is that PHARS will ensure a massive release and may put in that extra effort in distribution because the burden is now on them.
#SRK films have CRAZY footfalls even in markets where Indian films barely release and so finally SRK will now have those premium prices, prime locs, better showcasing etc. And hence, if the film is accepted, records will be shattered.
Bollywood films are barely purchased this way and here KING is purchased that too at some record price. Levels. 🙏🙏🙏

For the unversed, Phars isn’t a newcomer in the overseas market and has worked with YRF on several titles, as well as independently distributed Prabhas’ Saaho. Meanwhile, the report also mentioned that Phars has paid a minimum guarantee of Rs 175 crore for the rights.
Meanwhile, given the fact that an Indian film hasn’t crossed the Rs 100 crore mark overseas, the figure is indeed quite big. And well, given the minimum guarantee, it only reflects the distributor’s confidence in a film’s box-office run.
Now, given that overseas distributors generally keep just 50% of the gross, to break even, King needs to collect around $37-40 million, or about Rs 350-375 crore, internationally. Looking back, both Pathaan and Jawan each earned around Rs 400 crore, so King must earn around the same amount.
King’s first song to release on SRK’s birthday
Reports suggest that King’s first song will release on November 2, which is also SRK’s birthday. The track will be a special release for fans, as they wait for the action thriller’s release. The song will introduce us to the film’s musical identity before new assets arrive. Variety India, meanwhile, also revealed that the trailer would be released later, and the birthday launch will mark an important step in the film’s promotional schedule.
