More than 760,000 15-year-olds across 91 countries and economies took the world’s largest comparative education test, though India did not participate. The findings reveal falling reading and maths scores, widening learning gaps, weaker motivation and growing concern about AI use
After nearly a decade in school, one in five 15-year-olds across OECD countries falls short of basic proficiency in reading, mathematics and science. These students may struggle to understand a straightforward text, interpret a simple graph or work out how a product’s price relates to its quantity.
In 2022, the share was closer to one in six. That deterioration sits at the heart of PISA 2025, which finds that learning outcomes in many education systems have continued to weaken after the pandemic-era setback.
