Bollywood Celebrities That Were Born In Mangalore
Although Mumbai is known as the dream City for Bollywood, Mangalore is known to be the birthplace of many Bollywood actors.
1. Aishwarya Rai
Before moving to Mumbai, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was born in Mangalore, Karnataka. Today she is one of the most recognisable Bollywood actresses, but her story begins in a small town in Mangalore, where she started her career with modelling.
After winning the Miss World title in 1994, Aishwarya Rai permanently moved to Mumbai. She made her acting debut with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar in 1997.
In the same year, Aishwarya Rai made her Bollywood debut opposite Bobby Deol in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. But her performance in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam established her as a leading actress in Hindi cinema.
Subsequently, her character in Devdas, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, gave Aishwarya Rai global recognition.
She then went on to work in several blockbusters. Her highest-grossing movie is Ponniyin Selvan: I. She appeared in many Bollywood movies including Mohabbatein, Jodha Akbar, Mohabbatein, and Guzaarish.
2. Shilpa Shetty
Shilpa Shetty, who made her Hindi film debut in 1993 with Baazigar, is another Bollywood actress born in Mangalore.
Before moving to Mumbai, she used to work as a model in Mangalore, which led her to land in Hindi cinema. Her early roles included Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Janwar. But in 2000, Shilpa Shetty starred in Dhadkan, which became one of the defining titles of her career.
Shilpa Shetty, in later years in Bollywood, experimented with different kinds of characters. One of her distinctive characters was in Phir Milenge, which was released in 2004. She played a woman living with HIV and facing stigma.
Subsequently, she moved from the big screen to television. She was in reality shows, including Dance India Dance as a host.
3. Shamita Shetty
Shamita Shetty, the younger sister of Shilpa Shetty, was also born in Mangalore. She entered Bollywood in the late 1990s and became widely known after her debut in Mohabbatein (2000).
She later appeared in films including Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai and Zeher. Although her filmography followed a different trajectory from Shilpa’s, she remained visible through television and reality shows, including Bigg Boss OTT.
4. Suniel Shetty
Suniel Shetty was born in Mulki, a town near Mangalore, into a Tulu-speaking Bunt family. He later grew up in Mumbai, where he began his journey towards a career in Hindi cinema.

Shetty has also spoken publicly about his attachment to Mulki and his family’s roots there. Unlike actors whose connection to a place is limited to their ancestry, his birthplace and personal ties to the region have remained part of his public story.
5. Rohit Shetty
Rohit Shetty has a connection with Mangalore through his father, M. B. Shetty, who was a well-known action choreographer and actor in Kannada cinema.
Rohit Shetty began his career as an assistant director on Phool Aur Kaante (1991), starring Ajay Devgn. He made his directorial debut with Zameen (2003), but it was Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006) that established his reputation as a commercial filmmaker.
His subsequent films included Singham, Chennai Express and Simmba, helping him build a filmography that spans action, comedy and large-scale entertainers.
