The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are set to issue national women’s team head coach Sarwar Imran with a show-cause notice over his comments to the media following Bangladesh’s 31-run defeat to Pakistan in the bronze-medal match, BCB women’s wing chairman Rafiqul Islam Babu told The Daily Star on Tuesday.
Sarwar, the outgoing head coach, said earlier in the day that the team’s poor results were partly due to changes in the coaching staff and captaincy being made just before a tournament.
“How can you expect good performance when you size up the head coach and captain during a tournament?” Imran told reporters after the match.
Rafiqul said the board would seek an explanation from the coach over the remarks.
“We will definitely show-cause Sarwar Imran for this because how can a senior coach say this? The media have written plenty of things like coach or captain changes etc. But have we once said anything officially?” Rafiqul told this newspaper.
“We told Sarwar Imran that once he returns, we will discuss how we can improve things,” he added.
Reports suggest that Bangladesh captain sent a letter to the BCB notifying the board of her decision. Rafiqul said Sarwar was wrong to suggest that the board had formally announced changes to the captaincy.
“The head coach said that I declared that the captain will not be there anymore. That is not right, which is why a show-cause notice will be issued,” he concluded.
