Dominic Sabir struck a maiden international half-century with an unbeaten 73 and Delray Rawlins finished not out on 67 as Bermuda responded with a brutal batting display to thrash Cayman Islands by ten wickets, hours after losing to the same opponents at the North American Cup on Wednesday.
Batting first at Jimmy Powell Oval, Cayman Islands posted 143 for five, but Sabir and Rawlins made light work of the chase, putting on an unbeaten century stand to guide Bermuda to a comfortable victory with 20 balls to spare.
Rawlins, who was awarded the player of the match having also picked up one for 22, was pleased with the response.
“It was just to respond to the first game,” Rawlins said.
“Obviously, no one likes losing. It hasn’t been ideal weather, we’ve been inside and boys have just been hanging around the hotel.
“It was just how things unfolded in our innings. Dominic Sabir was going well and my job was just to support him and help him keep going.
“I wasn’t really too fussed about the man of the match, but credit to him. He showed his skill and showed how good he is and his potential — long may it continue for us.”
Bermuda fought well with the ball and backed their bowling with some fine fielding.
In what could be a contender for catch of the tournament, Kamau Leverock, in Bermuda colours for the first time since February 2024, took a one-handed stunner to dismiss Sachin Diwangana at backward point off the bowling of Kevon Fubler.
Captain Terryn Fray was pleased with the composure and professionalism his side showed in the second encounter, highlighting a much improved all-round performance as they bounced back strongly.
“We used that first match this morning to just shake off the rust and clear out the cobwebs,” he said.
“It was all about the business in that second match. Just a bit of a kick up the backside for the boys and we really needed to win this one.
“We could have been a little bit tighter with our bowling; however, these things happen. Dominic Sabir and Delray Rawlins really set the tone with the bat, so we’re happy with that.
“We thought that was probably a par score from the first match and we weren’t really worried about that.
“We knew that if we get off to the start that we’re used to getting off to in the powerplay, getting to the 140 or 150 mark should be obtainable. It was just about managing from there and I thought they managed it really well.”
In the first match of the double-header, Leverock led the scoring with 46 and Zerai Tomlinson contributed 21 as Bermuda posted 113 in 19.2 overs.
While left-arm spinner Rawlins led the fightback with four for 15, Cayman crossed the line with nine balls to spare.
Reflecting on the first match, Fray felt they were a couple of runs short of what could have been a winning total.
“I just think we were a little slow to bat and we were obviously getting used to the conditions,” the Bermuda captain said.
“A lot of guys haven’t been outside in the last couple of weeks, so it was good to just get out there and get a feel.
“We felt we were probably maybe 20 runs short of what we thought ended up probably being a decent score.
“But I think in the end, we bowled really well, we managed to get some wickets and it got really tight.
“Maybe if one or two other calls had gone our way, it might be a different outcome. But congratulations to them, I thought the top order batted pretty well, got them into the match and then they were able to carry on.
“I would have to give the majority of it to how we started the powerplay — we lost too many wickets. We lost three in the powerplay and that’s the bulk of our batting line-up there.
“In the middle overs, we gave away a couple wickets at crucial times that definitely hindered the momentum of our innings.
“It’s all a learning process for us here. We’ve got a couple young guys that we’re trying to integrate into our cricket. Over the next couple matches, we’ll find our footing and we’ll be fine.”
Bermuda are next back in action on Friday in a double-header against Bahamas.
