India leads Asia with record 143 universities in THE 2027 rankings; IISc, Jamia among top-ranked

India has emerged as the most-represented country in Asia in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 for the second consecutive year, with 143 universities making the global list.

The number is 15 higher than in the previous edition. The rankings also place India as the second most-represented country globally, behind the United States with 163 institutions.

Despite the increase in representation, India has no university in the global top 250. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is the country’s highest-ranked institution, placed 254th globally with an overall score of 57.0.

Chennai-based Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences is the second-highest Indian institution, placed in the 326–350 global band. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences in Himachal Pradesh follows in the 451–500 band.

Three Indian institutions—Jamia Millia Islamia, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Lovely Professional University (LPU)—feature in the 510–550 global band.

Galgotias University moved into the 1001–1200 global band and ranked 41st among Indian institutions.

The THE World University Rankings assess universities across five performance pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook.

The 2027 edition assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories.
