Reports of arrests and intimidation of journalists at voting rights protests raise international alarm

Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, alongside others, address a press conference at the Press Club of India in New Delhi on Oct. 11, 2026, following their release from preventive detention. The leaders are part of a youth-led protest movement against alleged government corruption and election irregularities. More than three dozen journalists were detained around Oct. 11 and 12 while covering the demonstrations, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Arun Sharma/PTI via AP
