Bangladesh named a full-strength squad for the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games 2026, but despite that, they failed to secure a medal.
The Bangladeshi team suffered a six-wicket defeat against Pakistan in the rain-hit first semifinal on October 1, and then, in the bronze medal playoff, Sri Lanka hammered them by 63 runs to secure a podium finish.
Bangladesh’s poor show in this year’s edition of the Asian Games raised question marks over Litton Das’ future as Bangladesh’s T20I captain, but he has refused to step down from his role.
According to him, his team bowled well in the first half of their match against Sri Lanka before No. 7 batter Tharindu Ratnayake took the match away with his explosive knock of 65 runs from 32 balls.
“I think we bowled very well in the first 8 overs (in the bronze medal match vs Sri Lanka). Then you saw the kind of shots (Ratnayake) came and played on this wicket, it was very difficult,” Litton was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“But he batted extraordinarily, where our bowlers didn’t have a clue how to come back. So credit has to be given to him for playing an extraordinary innings with the bat. And when we went to bat, we couldn’t cover it up in any way. Batting-wise, we weren’t up to the mark today,” he added.
Litton acknowledged that his team failed to live up to expectations at the Asian Games 2026 and his individual performance was also not good but sees no point in quitting captaincy.
“My performance was not up to the mark. I could not perform well in both the matches,” Litton said.
“I don’t want to resign. There are ups and downs in cricket. One day it will be good, one day it will be bad. There is no point in resigning here. It’s normal. I came with a big target. When I can’t deliver that… everyone will feel bad and it’s natural. But as a team, we have given a lot in the past. I think we will give in the future too. We will try for that again,” he added.
