The opening day of the new Ranji Trophy campaign threw up plenty of contrasts for India’s regulars and Test hopefuls across the country.
Mohammed Shami began the season in the best possible way with a disciplined spell for Bengal, while Yashasvi Jaiswal’s morning at the Wankhede Stadium ended in a quick duck.

Shami bowled 17 overs against Delhi at the BCA Ground in Kalyani, nine of which were maidens, and finished with figures of 3/29. He removed Yash Dhull for 9 and Ayush Doseja for 45, the latter trapped LBW by an inswinger in the afternoon session.

He had good support from his fellow international seamers. Mukesh Kumar took 1/43 from 17 overs at an economy rate of just 2.52, and his wicket was the middle-order batter, Jonty Sidhu.
Akash Deep claimed 2/74 from 17 overs, with opener Sanat Sangwan and Anuj Rawat, who went for a duck, among his victims.

Yashasvi Jaiswal falls for a duck
At the Wankhede, Jaiswal was dismissed for a 13-ball duck in the morning session, caught by Shivam Bhambri off Jagjit Singh Sandhu, which left Mumbai at 1/1 in 2.6 overs. Sarfaraz Khan didn’t fare any better, since he was out LBW for 1 just before tea.
Musheer Khan repaired some of the damage with a determined 65 off 149 balls, including four fours, before Rohit Dhanda removed him. Ayush Mhatre had scored 48.
KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair fail as Karnataka collapse against Andhra
Karnataka’s famous top order had a morning to forget at Mulapadu in Vijayawada.

Mayank Agarwal was bowled by Kavuri Saiteja for 5 off eight balls in the third over, and KL Rahul followed nine balls later, caught by wicketkeeper K.R. Reddy off K.V. Sasikanth for 4 from 11 deliveries.
Karun Nair was then trapped LBW by Sasikanth for 8 in the eighth over, and Karnataka were reeling at 22/4.
The recovery came from KL Shrijith, who made 58, and captain Ravichandran Smaran, who struck 111 off 197 balls.
Auqib Nabi leads Jammu and Kashmir defence
In Srinagar, the defending champions made life difficult for Madhya Pradesh in cold, overcast weather.
Auqib Nabi did not take a wicket but bowled 19 overs for 42 runs, two of them maidens, at an economy rate of 2.21, and the pressure he created helped J&K restrict the visitors to 165/8 from 67 overs.

Yash Dubey fell early to Sunil Kumar for 4 off 11 balls, and India A off-spinning all-rounder Saransh Jain was out for a three-ball duck, bowled by J&K’s Rohit Sharma.
Ravindra Jadeja, Prithvi Shaw and Mohammed Siraj: How other India names fared
Elsewhere, Ravindra Jadeja was solid for Saurashtra against Chhattisgarh in Rajkot, finishing on an unbeaten 53 off 125 balls with the team on 265/4.
Prithvi Shaw, captaining Maharashtra against Services in Delhi, struck a fluent 70 off 73 balls, including nine fours, and Ankit Bawne was on 81 not out as the side closed on 253/5.
Mohammed Siraj bowled nine tight overs for 25 runs without a wicket for Hyderabad, but his side still dominated, since the spinners Tanay Thyagarajan and Anikethreddy helped bowl Tripura out for 134 in 44 overs, and Hyderabad were 52/0 in reply.

R. Sai Kishore went wicketless for Tamil Nadu in Jaipur, conceding 46 in eight overs, as Rajasthan reached 231/4.
