New physical education module launched for better grassroots sports talent hunt

India’s next sporting champion could be sitting in a school classroom or running on a school ground. The government now wants physical education teachers to play a bigger role in finding them.

Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has launched the Physical Education Professionals’ Module on the National Sports Repository System (NSRS), bringing PE teachers into a structured national talent identification effort.

FROM SCHOOL GROUND TO NATIONAL DATABASE

The new module will create a nationwide repository of physical education professionals, mapping their qualifications, skills and areas of specialisation. The government wants this information organised at district, state and national levels.

Mandaviya has also called for a nationwide registration campaign for PE teachers and directed that the repository be created within six months, with its progress reviewed regularly.

The idea is simple: PE teachers spend considerable time watching children run, jump, play and compete. That gives them an opportunity to notice physical attributes and sporting potential that may otherwise go unidentified.

A MORE SCIENTIFIC SEARCH FOR TALENT

Mandaviya said India’s talent hunt should begin at the grassroots and follow a scientific approach. The process should start in schools and colleges before extending to district, state and national levels.

Sports science, he said, also has a role across the sporting journey, from identifying and nurturing young athletes to training elite competitors.

The repository could also help identify PE professionals based on specialised skills and capabilities, potentially giving teachers with particular expertise opportunities for wider exposure.

The module has been introduced on NSRS, the centralised digital platform for maintaining information on stakeholders in India’s sports ecosystem. The launch was attended by officials from the Sports Authority of India, Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education and other sports organisations.

The larger shift is clear: India’s search for sporting talent is being pushed closer to where young athletes first show what they can do, the school ground.
