IIT Madras Centre for Innovation showcases student projects

The interaction came a day after Joshi visited IIT Madras’ Centre for Innovation on October 7. During the visit, student teams showcased projects, prototypes, and technology-driven solutions. The Centre for Innovation provides students with a platform to work on practical projects beyond conventional classroom learning. The focus on building prototypes and developing technology solutions gives students an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to real-world problems.Joshi highlighted the creativity, practical approach and entrepreneurial spirit reflected in the projects presented by the students. The visit comes amid increasing emphasis on research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in higher education, particularly at institutions such as IIT Madras.

Indian Knowledge Systems also part of IIT Madras discussions

Joshi’s engagement at IIT Madras also included discussions around Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). The focus was on exploring how India’s scientific, technological, and cultural traditions can be connected with contemporary education, research, and innovation.IIT Madras has academic initiatives linked to Indian Knowledge Systems, including courses covering subjects such as mathematics and astronomy in India, Indian aesthetic thought, Indian classics and Sanskrit-based scientific traditions. The institute’s work in this area reflects an attempt to examine traditional knowledge through academic and research frameworks while connecting it with contemporary areas of study.

Innovation, research and entrepreneurship in focus

Joshi’s two-day engagement at IIT Madras brought together three themes that are increasingly prominent in higher education: student-led innovation, research and the integration of knowledge traditions with modern academic work. The Centre for Innovation’s project-based environment allows students to move from classroom concepts to prototypes and technology solutions. IIT Madras also has a wider innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem aimed at taking research and ideas towards real-world applications. Its School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship describes the institute’s ecosystem as a pathway from research and innovation to deep-tech ventures.Against this backdrop, the education minister’s interaction with students placed their experiences and aspirations at the centre of discussions on the future of higher education.
