Kolkata: The state higher education department has asked Jadavpur University to submit last five years’ records of students being admitted and registered into PhD programmes in five arts departments of English, Bengali, international relations, comparative literature and education.“The information sought includes the names of PhD supervisors, number of PhD scholars admitted or registered under each supervisor in each academic year, the total number of PhD scholars admitted or registered under each supervisor in the last five years and if there was any violation of UGC norms,” said an insider.Acting registrar Debajit Dutta said, “We received the letter from the higher education department on Tuesday. We are collating the data and will send it at the earliest.”The move came apparently following allegations of irregularities in PhD programmes at JU, levelled raised by RSS-affiliated students’ and teachers’ wings. Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh had written to the JU VC, seeking a probe by a central investigation agency into the alleged irregularities in PhD admissions.Earlier, the state department had asked JU for records of PhD admissions of all departments for the past 10 years. The university is yet to submit that record.For PhD admissions, the department issued an order on Aug 5 and asked universities to use scores from UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE and similar national-level tests, followed by an interview. It also “requested” universities not to conduct PhD Admission Test (PAT) or RETs. A professor in the arts faculty at JU said, “Until the Aug 5 order, different departments held RET because its provision was included in UGC regulations. There are also disciplines, like film studies and nanoscience, where UGC doesn’t hold NET. So, RET is conducted there.”ABVP member and JU research scholar Subhajit Saha said, “We want an investigation into every department, where students were admitted through RET. We have proof of some departments, such as education and IR.”
