New Zealand have recalled Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe and Bella James for their three-match T20I series against Australia later this month.
The quartet was part of the wider group that missed out on selection for the recent T20 World Cup, with Carson returning after recovering from elbow surgery that had kept her out of action since December last year. The off-spinner, who has 51 international caps, adds to a spin department that also includes captain Amelia Kerr, Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire.
“To be back in the WHITE FERNS environment is really special,” Carson said. “The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I’ve been fortunate to have great support around me and I’m feeling ready to get back out there and contribute.”
Penfold and Rowe return to bolster the pace attack following the international retirements of Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu, while James adds to the batting options following Suzie Bates’s departure. Rowe and James spent part of the winter with New Zealand A in Sri Lanka, while Penfold recently featured for Sandgate Redcliffe Gators in Australia’s KFC T20 Max competition.
Wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze has been ruled out after undergoing surgery on a persistent thumb injury. She is targeting a return to cricket in early 2027, with Polly Inglis set to take over the wicketkeeping duties.
Dean Brownlie, who has served as New Zealand’s batting coach for nearly four years, will take charge as interim head coach following Ben Sawyer’s departure. Additional coaching support for the tour is expected to be announced next week.
Brownlie welcomed the for inclusions in the squad, and the balance of ‘experience and future-focus’.
“We’re excited to welcome back Eden, Hannah, Molly, and Bella. There’s a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad and it’s going to be a chance for the group to test themselves against a quality side,” Brownlie said. “Competing against the best in the world is always going to be a challenge, but it also provides a lot of opportunities to learn and strengthen skillsets within that.”
The series will mark New Zealand’s first international assignment of the 2026-27 season and will also serve as part of their preparations for the inaugural 2027 ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in India.
