ALIGARH, October 9: A 19-day-long protest by students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), including an indefinite hunger strike by postgraduate student Yasir Fahad, ended today after the University administration accepted all the demands of the protesting students, including the holding of elections to the AMU StudentsтАЩ Union.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon visited the protest site, met the students and offered juice to Yasir Fahad, bringing his hunger strike to an end. Addressing the gathering, she acknowledged the studentsтАЩ peaceful and democratic approach and reiterated the UniversityтАЩs concern for their welfare.
тАЬYour protest has been democratic, peaceful and principled, and it has brought a result. In appreciation of that spirit, the University has accepted all your demands. Throughout these days, my foremost concern was the health of Yasir Fahad, for the well-being of every student is the first responsibility of this University. Dialogue has shown us the way forward, and I appeal to all of you to carry this spirit of trust and calm into the life of the campus,тАЭ Prof. Khatoon said.
The resolution followed several rounds of meetings between the University authorities and the protesting students, during which their concerns were discussed and efforts made to resolve the impasse.
It maybe noted that the two major demands of the students, declaration of AMUSU elections and replacement of the Proctor has been met by the university administration. Prof Mohd Nafees Ahmad Ansari of the Department of Political Science has been appointed as the new Proctor of the university, who replaces Prof Mohd. Naved Khan of the Department of Business Administration.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has appointed Prof. Javaid Talib of the Department of Law as Chief Election Officer to conduct the AMU StudentsтАЩ Union elections and Prof. Nazia Hasan, Professor, Department of English, WomenтАЩs College, as Chief Election Officer for the Undergraduate StudentsтАЩ Union of WomenтАЩs College for the academic session 2026тАУ2027.
Yasir Fahad and the other protesting students expressed satisfaction over the resolution of the issue. The dharna site resonated with slogans in support of the Vice Chancellor and the University administration, reflecting the studentsтАЩ response to the acceptance of their demands and the conclusion of the agitation. The site has been evacuated by the students voluntarily with immediate effect.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof M. Mohsin Khan, Registrar Prof Aasim Zafar, Dean of StudentsтАЩ Welfare (DSW) Prof M. Athar Ansari, Proctor Prof Mohd Nafees Ahmad Ansari, OSD to the Vice Chancellor Prof. Asfar Ali Khan, Election Officer Prof Javaid Talib, Controller of Examinations Prof. Mujib Ullah Zuberi, Coordinator of the Cultural Education Centre (CEC) Prof M. Rizwan Khan, Member In-charge of the Public Relations Office (MIC PRO) Prof Vibha Sharma, Chairperson of the Department of Linguistics Prof M.J. Warsi, and a large number of teachers were present on the occasion.
With the acceptance of the studentsтАЩ demands, the agitation has come to an end, paving the way for normalcy to return to the campus. The resolution also underscores the importance of dialogue in addressing student concerns and the role of an elected and representative StudentsтАЩ Union in University affairs.
