ALIGARH, September 25: The Department of Ilmul Advia, A.K. Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised a special lecture in hybrid mode on “An Innovative Green Approach to Joshanda Preparation of AYUSH Herbs for Maximising Thermolabile Antibiotic Components”, delivered by Prof. Abdul Latif, former Chairman, Department of Ilmul Advia, AMU.
Prof. Syeda Amna Naaz, Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine, chaired the programme. More than 50 participants attended in physical mode, while around 100 joined online.
In his lecture, Prof. Abdul Latif discussed Green Extraction Technology for Joshanda, an important aqueous extraction method in Unani pharmacy, and explained how prolonged heating can affect heat-sensitive and volatile constituents. He discussed low-temperature and energy-efficient techniques, including ultrasound-assisted, vacuum, microwave-assisted and ohmic extraction, and demonstrated a proposed domestic microwave-based approach. He stressed that temperature and processing time should be established experimentally for individual herbs to ensure effective extraction and preservation of therapeutically important constituents.
Prof. Latif concluded that the objective should be effective extraction rather than simply prolonged heating, with controlled processing and energy-efficient technologies helping minimise unnecessary degradation.
Prof. Syeda Amna Naaz appreciated the scientific relevance of the lecture and emphasised the need for systematic research into the relationship between individual drugs, temperature, extraction conditions and preservation of therapeutically important constituents.
Earlier, welcoming the speaker and participants, Prof. Abdur Rauf, Chairman, Department of Ilmul Advia, highlighted the importance of exploring contemporary scientific approaches to improve traditional pharmaceutical practices while preserving the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants.
