Aligarh, September 21: Begum Sultan Jahan (BSJ) Hall, Aligarh Muslim University, organised an orientation programme for newly admitted students to facilitate a smooth transition into university and hostel life, while sensitising them to well-being, mentorship, safety, hygiene, mutual respect and responsible community living.
Dr. Fatima Khan, Provost, BSJ Hall, introduced the freshers to the Hall’s facilities, rules and support systems and emphasised the importance of discipline, mutual support, physical and mental well-being, hygiene and healthy community living. She reiterated that BSJ Hall is a No-Ragging Zone and encouraged senior residents to guide and support the new students.
A key highlight was the launch of “Synnect: A Peer Mentorship Programme”, under which experienced students will mentor freshers on academics, campus facilities and everyday hostel life. The initiative aims to strengthen peer support and make the transition to university life more comfortable.
Mental health sensitisation was another important component of the programme. A skit presented by students highlighted common academic and personal challenges and encouraged students to seek timely counselling and emotional support, while promoting open conversations around mental well-being.
Dr. Faiza Abbasi, Director, UGC MMTTC, AMU, highlighted the vision of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the values of education, unity and institution-building.
Prof. Subuhi Khan, Deputy DSW, and Ms. Aziza Rizvi shared their hostel experiences and encouraged the freshers to make meaningful use of their university years through dedication, integrity and responsible participation in campus life.
The programme also included felicitation of the organising committee and student volunteers. Dr. Nazia Haneef, Warden, proposed a vote of thanks. Dr. Rabia Riyaz, among others, attended the programme.
The orientation reinforced the message that hostel life at AMU extends beyond accommodation, providing students with opportunities for mentorship, personal growth, social responsibility, well-being and meaningful community engagement.
