Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia on Wednesday seemed to confirm that men’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar won’t get an extension on his contract, which ends on October 4. Saikia said that the position would be ‘vacant’ after that date and that the board had ‘sufficient time’ to decide on his replacement.

So far, only media reports have claimed that Agarkar had decided against wanting an extension to his contract, after seeing the board officials not interested in giving him one either. After the BCCI’s latest meeting, Saikia had refused to confirm or deny the news, saying that no decision on his job was taken, and adding, ’15 days is a long time in the world of cricket’.

“As far as Ajit Agarkar is concerned, his tenure is going to be over on 4th of October and we have sufficient time till 4th,” Saikia told PTI Videos. “We are going to take a decision regarding the vacant position which will be there after 4th of October. Once any decision is taken by BCCI, we will definitely announce it in public domain,” he added.

Saikia was one of the major players in Agarkar’s departure. According to reports, Agarkar had informed ODI superstar Rohit Sharma that the selection committee had decided to move on from him, but Saikia made a public comment denying that and backing the batter to continue.

This angered Agarkar and made him realise that he wouldn’t be able to make any big calls in the future, which pushed him to not seek a renewal. Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel is considered a front-runner for the job, and some reports have said that South Zone selector Pragyan Ojha, who worked under Agarkar, could take over on an interim basis till a permanent name is finalised.
