DDLJ’s Secret Fast To Animal’s Infidelity Confession: Bollywood’s Iconic Karwa Chauth Moments

Karwa Chauth has given Bollywood some of its most memorable romantic moments. But the fast has often served more than one purpose for the movie. In Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, it was an act of love declaration; in Biwi No 1, the fast exposes infidelity; and in Bhagban, it shows how a relationship can thrive in long distance.

These Hindi movies offer Karwa Chauth scenes that explore love, marriage, family expectations and betrayal.

Iconic Bollywood Movies Featuring Karwa Chauth

While some of the movies are remembered for their strong love connection, others stand out because they question marital devotion.

1. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995): Simran secretly fasts for Raj

The Karwa Chauth fasting sequence in Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is most defining because of Simran and Raj’s open declaration of their love.

Kajol’s Simran is engaged to Kuljeet, played by Parmeet Sethi, but she loves Raj, played by Shah Rukh Khan. During Karwa Chauth, Simran secretly fasts for Raj. When it is time to break the fast, Simran pretends to faint, allowing Raj to help her drink water.

The sequence stands out because breaking the fast becomes part of Simran’s struggle to marry the love of her life and defy her family’s expectations. The scene remains a defining example of how Bollywood romanticised Karwa Chauth in the 1990s.

2. Biwi No 1 (1999): One fast, two women and a husband caught in between

David Dhawan’s comedy Biwi No 1 puts a twist on Karwa Chauth. Prem (Salman Khan) is married to Pooja (Karisma Kapoor) but is having an affair with Rupali (Sushmita Sen).

On Karwa Chauth, Prem attempts to manage the expectations of both women, who observe the fast for him.

The sequence works because it uses a romantic convention to expose Prem’s deception. Instead of presenting the husband as the centre of a loving household, the film uses his behaviour to reveal marital infidelity.

3. Baghban (2003): When the fast tests the physical distance between the couple

In Baghban, Ravi Chopra shifts the familiar young romance to an elderly couple’s enduring love. Raj Malhotra, played by Amitabh Bachchan, and Pooja, Hema Malini, are forced to live separately after their children fail to accommodate them together.

Their Karwa Chauth sequence is emotional because they cannot perform the ritual side by side. Instead, they connect over the telephone and celebrate the festival despite the distance.

It is impactful because the movie uses the festival to underline the emotional cost of keeping a long-married couple apart.

4. Animal (2023): Karwa Chauth takes a darker turn

In Animal, Sandeep Reddy Vanga takes an unconventional approach to Bollywood’s idealised Karwa Chauth celebration. Geetanjali, played by Rashmika Mandanna, observes Karwa Chauth for her husband Ranvijay, played by Ranbir Kapoor.

When it comes to breaking the fast, Ranvijay confesses his infidelity. The admission brings conflict to their already tarnished relationship. It disrupts the familiar expectations that come with a festival.

5. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001): Bole Chudiya makes Karwa Chauth a huge spectacle

Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham introduced the concept of grand celebrations of festivals. In the movie, Karwa Chauth brings everyone together through the song ‘Bole Chudiyan’.

The sequence features Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol), along with Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) and Pooja (Kareena Kapoor Khan), amid lavish costumes, choreography and festive sets.

The song appeals to the idea that Karwa Chauth is not simply a private exchange between husband and wife; it becomes part of a shared cultural identity.
