President Ali opens Over-40s Masters World Cup with eyes on T20 hosting bid

Guyana’s growing reputation as a sports hub took another step forward Friday night as President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali officially opened the second edition of the International Masters Cricket Over-40s World Cup and pledged the government’s full support for hosting next year’s Over-40s T20 World Cup.

Welcoming 15 international teams to the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, President Ali underscored sport’s role in bringing people together and building international connections.

“Sports is not only about a game; sports is about relationships,” President Ali said during his opening address. “It is about bringing people together. It’s about fusing cultures. It’s about bridging inequalities. It’s about celebration of life, and this tournament speaks to those important elements of sports.”

The tournament, which features former international and domestic stars, highlights how veteran athletes continue to play at a high level. President Ali praised the players for their dedication, noting the personal investment required to remain active in competitive cricket.

“Sport is that important product that allows us to remain competitive, to remain focused, to remain mentally strong, and to remain an inspiration for our families, our communities, our clubs, and our country,” he added, assuring organisers of state backing for future hosting bids.

“If there is anything anyone on the team needs, just let us know. Minister Jacobs is here with you, and we will try our best to make your stay here as comfortable as you may want it to be.”

Steven Jacobs, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, pointed to President Ali’s vision for sports infrastructure as a key driver in bringing major fixtures—including the Global Super League—to the nation.

“Guyana is definitely a sporting destination in 2026,” Minister Jacobs said, welcoming the visiting sides and wishing all participants success over the coming fortnight.

Action begins on Saturday morning across 11 grounds nationwide, including Providence, the historic Georgetown Cricket Club, and the Albion Sports Complex.

The hosts, West Indies Over-40s, kick off their campaign against Australia at Providence. Captained by former West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Denesh Ramdin, the regional squad features household names such as Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jason Mohammed, Narsingh Deonarine, and Devendra Bishoo.

The tournament sees 15 teams split into two groups, expanding on the 14-team lineup from the inaugural 2024 event in South Africa.

Group A includes defending champions South Africa, along with Australia, West Indies, Canada, Colombia, Wales, and Namibia.

Group B features England, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Scotland, the USA, the Rest of the World, and the Rest of the Caribbean.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, with the tournament set to conclude on October 31 at the Guyana National Stadium. (Modified from DPI)
