Released on September 25, the film brings together Indian folklore, fantasy and comedy in a story that clearly wants to offer something different. However, is it worth watching? Let’s find out.

What Is The Plot Of The Vvaan?

The Vvaan follows Rishi, played by Sidharth Malhotra, a city-bred rationalist who returns to his ancestral village in Bihar with his wife, Mamta (Tamannaah Bhatia), to sell an inherited land. However, his plans take an unexpected turn when he learns about an ancient belief surrounding a forest that villagers are forbidden from entering after sunset. Initially, Rishi dismisses the warnings as mere superstition, but things change when he meets Deepak (Sunil Grover), who wants to clear part of the forest to improve connectivity for the village.

One night, Rishi ventures into the forbidden forest and accidentally breaks an ancient seal. What follows forces him to confront the legend of the Van Devi and a supernatural force that has remained hidden for generations. As the strange events unfold, Rishi finds his rational worldview challenged, leaving him with little choice but to uncover the truth behind the forest and its long-buried secrets.

What Works For The Vvaan?

The biggest strength of The Vvaan is its attempt to combine Indian folklore with fantasy. The concept gives the film a distinct flavour and helps it stand apart from conventional romantic or action entertainers. It offers something new to the audience and is a delight to watch.

The dialogue writing is another strong aspect of The Vvaan. Several lines are smartly crafted and land effectively, particularly during the lighter and more conversational moments. The writing manages to bring out the humour without completely taking away from the film’s central narrative. Some exchanges between the characters feel natural and add personality to the scenes, while a few dialogues manage to elevate otherwise ordinary sequences.

The first half of The Vvaan is engaging and manages to establish the characters and central conflict without feeling unnecessarily stretched. The narrative moves at a fairly steady pace, allowing the audience to understand Rishi, his rational outlook and the strange circumstances surrounding the forbidden forest. The film takes its time to introduce the folklore and build curiosity around the supernatural elements without overwhelming the story.

What Does Not Work For The Vvaan?

The biggest problem with The Vvaan is its screenplay. Despite having an interesting premise, the film doesn’t always know how to take the story forward. There are stretches, especially in the second half, where the narrative loses pace and the fantasy elements don’t receive the depth they deserve.

At several places, the film also appears desperate to make the audience laugh. While some jokes work, several others feel forced and overstretched. The constant effort to create comic moments eventually becomes irritating, particularly when the humour interrupts the flow of the story.

There’s another point filmmakers must understand: it is not necessary to add songs anywhere and everywhere in the film. In The Vvaan too, tracks don’t always feel organically integrated into the narrative and, in places, seem unnecessary.

The Vvaan Cast Performance

Sidharth Malhotra does his part well. He fits comfortably into the world created by the film and handles both the dramatic and lighter portions with sincerity. He manages to keep the central character engaging even when the screenplay doesn’t offer him enough.

Tamannaah Bhatia is also good and delivers what the role demands. Her chemistry with the rest of the cast works, although the screenplay could have given her character more to do.

Shweta Tiwari and Anup Soni also deserve a pat on theit back. They are among the film’s pleasant surprises. Both actors bring authenticity and energy to their scenes.

Maniesh Paul, however, doesn’t bring anything particularly new to the table. His character once again falls into the familiar mould of the male lead’s next-door friend who keeps trying to be funny. The role feels predictable and doesn’t add much to the overall narrative.

The Vvaan Verdict: Yay Or Nay?

The Vvaan has an interesting idea at its core and deserves credit for attempting to bring Indian folklore and fantasy together. It is entertaining in parts, with smart dialogues, some genuinely funny moments and committed performances from its cast. However, an inconsistent screenplay, forced humour and unnecessary songs prevent it from becoming a consistently engaging experience.
