8 Indian colleges that served as cinematic backdrops for Bollywood movies

Located atop the hills of Lavale in Pune, FLAME University is a blend of modern minimalism and natural harmony. Defined by its clean lines, expansive glass facades, and open courtyards, the campus flawlessly integrates contemporary design with the surrounding landscape.

It’s no surprise then that FLAME University became the set for Nadaaniyan, Dharma Productions’ film marking Ibrahim Ali Khan’s debut alongside Khushi Kapoor. The film, aiming to explore the themes of young love, finds an apt visual metaphor in the university’s architecture. The airy classrooms, amphitheater-like gathering spaces, and panoramic hillside views only accentuates this youthful ambience that Naadanyian wished to capture.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect B.V. Doshi, IIM Bangalore is a striking example of brutalist architecture, where raw concrete, expansive stone corridors, and lush courtyards come together to create an academic oasis. Established in 1973, the campus is defined by interconnected pathways, geometric facades, and open-air amphitheaters, embodying Doshi’s philosophy of fluid spaces that encourage dialogue and collaboration.

In 3 Idiots (2009), Rajkumar Hirani’s celebrated coming-of-age drama, IIM Bangalore becomes the fictional Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), a place that both nurtures and challenges its students. Much like the film itself, IIM Bangalore’s design is both monumental and intimate. The film, starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, captures the long, shaded corridors, and open courtyards, using them as a backdrop for moments of friendship, rebellion, and introspection. The stone-clad walls and labyrinthine walkways serve as a visual metaphor for the rigid, high-pressure education system the characters navigate.
