Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, long considered the front-runner to replace Ajit Agarkar as the BCCI men’s chief selector, has yet to apply for the job.

The BCCI opened the job applications for the vacant spot on October 6, with the deadline to apply set for October 14 at 5 pm IST. According to PTI, Patel hadn’t applied for it by then, and won’t be able to anymore unless the board extends the deadline.

Currently, South Zone selector Pragyan Ojha is serving as an interim chief selector by virtue of having played the most number of Tests in the committee. As of now, Parthiv is likely to remain with the Gujarat Titans’ coaching setup and continue his broadcasting work instead of joining the senior selection panel, with Ojha likely to continue the rest of his stint as the chief selector.

The BCCI, in its October 6 statement, had said that the new selector will be responsible for picking India’s teams across Tests, ODIs and T20Is, identifying emerging talent and building bench strength. The role will also involve scouting players in domestic and international cricket, attending team meetings, travelling for matches and submitting quarterly performance evaluation reports to the BCCI Apex Council.

According to the eligibility criteria, applicants must have played at least seven Test matches, 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches. Candidates must also have retired from cricket at least five years ago.

The replacement is expected to be from West Zone, where Agarkar hailed from.

The report said Mumbai-based former India women’s coach Ramesh Powar, who was expected to take charge of the junior men’s selection committee, could now be in contention for the senior selector’s post from the West Zone. Former India wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe is another potential candidate. Both Powar and Dighe applied for the role.
