The University of Liverpool has officially opened its Bengaluru campus, becoming the first Russell Group university to establish a campus in Karnataka. Located in Alembic City, Whitefield, the campus has welcomed nearly 300 students in its inaugural cohort. It has launched undergraduate programmes in Computer Science, Game Design, Business Management, Accounting and Finance, and Biomedical Sciences. The campus features smart classrooms, research and innovation spaces, collaboration hubs, specialised laboratories and access to Bloomberg terminals, states the official press release.
The opening ceremony was attended by Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development M. B. British Deputy Commissioner to Karnataka Harshbir Sangha and British Council India Director Alison Barrett were also present.
The university said its programmes combine academic learning with industry engagement, practical experience and global exposure. The curriculum is designed to develop critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration and skills relevant to changing workforce requirements, it added.
The opening ceremony also highlighted the historical and economic links between Liverpool and India. Shilpa Nag, Special Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, and Tim Games, Executive Director for Investment and Delivery of Liverpool City Region, signed a Joint Declaration of Intent to explore greater collaboration between the two regions.
The event also celebrated the legacy of Professor Har Gobind Khorana, the Indian-born Nobel laureate who completed his PhD at the University of Liverpool in 1948. A lecture theatre at the Bengaluru campus has been named in his honour, and his original doctoral manuscript was displayed during the event.
The campus launch included a showcase of the university’s long-standing research collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), along with a new seed fund with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar welcomed the new campus stating that it would add to the state’s knowledge and innovation ecosystem by providing students with an international teaching and learning environment.
“The University of Liverpool Bengaluru campus is a fantastic addition to our thriving knowledge and innovation ecosystem, providing a world-class teaching and learning experience for students. The University has carefully considered the graduate-level skills required here in Karnataka and I have no doubt that the campus’ graduates will go on to enjoy highly successful careers,” said Shivakumar.
“The University of Liverpool’s wider ambition to contribute economically, socially and culturally is also clear. They are building on strong foundations with existing long-standing research partnerships already delivering impactful outcomes and I look forward to seeing the positive wider impacts of the campus over the years to come,” he added.
University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones said the institution was proud to open its first international campus in more than 20 years. “We are incredibly proud to have officially opened our first international campus in over 20 years in Bengaluru and to have done so in such distinguished company. As a university community we are firmly committed to the places we call home and we look forward to working in partnership with fellow universities, industry and the not-for-profit sector to create positive impact for communities both locally and globally,” he said.
“We are delighted to have recruited close to 300 talented students to study our research-connected, employer-informed curricula this year. We have carefully planned all aspects of their learning experience to ensure they receive the support they need to reach their full potential, and I look forward to their matriculation ceremony tomorrow,” Jones added.
Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool is a research-intensive institution and a member of the UK’s Russell Group of research universities. It said its Bengaluru campus would offer UK-accredited degree programmes tailored to India’s evolving higher education and workforce needs.
