‘New look’ Essex take on Bears attackpublished at 12:56 BST

Essex 134 & 67-1 v Warwickshire 191 – lunch

Mike Taylor
BBC WM commentator

Essex started their second innings with a slightly more
forceful attitude than their first and it has brought them back
roughly to parity in the game.

It would be unjust to say simply that they
rode their luck, although there could have been more wickets than
just the one that fell shortly before lunch.

Paul Walter aimed regular
aggressive flicks to leg throughout his innings of 42, some more successfully
than others, but eventually perished trying to hit Manav Suthar over
long-on as Chris Woakes judged a swirling catch without fuss.

Woakes had bowled a challenging six-over spell without
reward, finding sharp movement, and must have been close to winning an lbw
verdict against Dean Elgar, Nigel Llong spotting that the ball had probably
pitched just outside the line of leg stump.

Warwickshire will bowl to only nine of the men they took on
yesterday, two substitutions having been made by Essex overnight.

Tom
Westley damaged a finger fielding, passing his place to Luc Benkenstein, the
captaincy to Sam Cook, and the number three position to Noah Thain. Shane
Snater’s knee tweak has opened up a chance for 17-year-old quick Jack
Auld.

He was not called upon to bowl his first Championship
delivery while Sam Hain oversaw Warwickshire adding 40 to their lead this
morning, punching confidently through and over the offside, while Ollie
Hannon-Dalby gave a 45-minute demonstration of stately forward defensive
strokes.
