A film’s box-office performance does not always determine its place in cinema history. While some movies become instant blockbusters, others take years to find their audience. From quirky comedies and unconventional romances to ambitious dramas, several Bollywood films that disappointed at the ticket windows eventually developed a loyal fan following. Television reruns, memorable dialogues, popular soundtracks and streaming platforms helped many of these movies find a second life. Here are eight Bollywood films that failed to make a big impact commercially on release but later earned cult status.
Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
Starring Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, this comedy directed by Rajkumar Santoshi did not perform as expected at the box office. However, its absurd humour, unforgettable characters and iconic dialogues gradually won over audiences. Today, it is regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s most loved comedy films.
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)
Kundan Shah’s satirical comedy follows two photographers who stumble upon corruption while trying to make an honest living. Though it struggled commercially upon release, its sharp take on politics, media and society earned it lasting appreciation. The film’s famous Mahabharata sequence remains particularly memorable.
Mera Naam Joker (1970)
Raj Kapoor’s ambitious drama about a clown who hides his sorrow behind laughter failed commercially when it first arrived in theatres. Its lengthy runtime and emotionally heavy storytelling proved challenging for audiences at the time. Over the years, however, the film has been appreciated for its ambition and emotional depth.
Agneepath (1990)
Amitabh Bachchan’s intense portrayal of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan did not translate into immediate box-office success. Directed by Mukul S. Anand, the crime drama later developed a devoted following for Bachchan’s performance, its gritty atmosphere and its powerful dialogues. The film also inspired a successful 2012 remake starring Hrithik Roshan.
Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001)
Starring R. Madhavan and Dia Mirza, this romantic drama struggled to make a strong impression at the box office. Its love story and memorable soundtrack, however, found a wider audience over time. The film eventually became a favourite among romance fans, with its songs continuing to evoke nostalgia.
Swades (2004)
Shah Rukh Khan played Mohan Bhargava, an NRI who returns to India and begins questioning his priorities after reconnecting with his roots. Ashutosh Gowariker’s film did not achieve major commercial success during its theatrical run. Its thoughtful storytelling, music and themes of social responsibility later earned it a passionate following.
Lakshya (2004)
Farhan Akhtar’s coming-of-age war drama featured Hrithik Roshan as a directionless young man who gradually discovers purpose through military service. Although the film underperformed commercially, its inspiring character journey, memorable music and portrayal of personal growth helped it find a wider audience in later years.
Tumbbad (2018)
Starring Sohum Shah, Tumbbad blends horror, mythology and greed in a story about a man obsessed with finding a hidden treasure. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, the film received limited commercial success during its initial theatrical run. However, its haunting atmosphere, striking visuals and unusual storytelling gradually earned it a devoted fan following. Over time, it became one of Hindi cinema’s most talked-about cult horror films.
