The Indian cricket board (BCCI) has reportedly started the process to appoint the next chairman of the men’s cricket team selection committee, with Ajit Agarkar unlikely to get an extension. Agarkar was first appointed to the role in July 2023, with his current contract running until October 4.

It appeared likely that the former India fast bowler would be given another extension running until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but recent events may have resulted in him not renewing the contract.

According to NDTV, the BCCI already has two names in mind, with former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel, alongside Pragyan Ojha, who is already part of the current selection panel, being the top candidates.

Agarkar, BCCI Not On The Same Page?

According to various reports, the selectors had informed former captain Rohit Sharma that he no longer features in their plan and that they want to move on with a focus on giving a younger player regular opportunities as they start building for next year’s ODI World Cup. They, though, had left it to Rohit, who has already retired from Tests and T20Is, to take a call on his ODI career.

The storm that the report triggered was followed by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia himself clarifying that there’s no such plan to force Rohit into retirement and that as long as he features in the plans, the veteran batter will continue to be picked.

Saikia’s remarks, though, didn’t go down well with the selectors, who reportedly had informed the board of their decision before having a talk with Rohit. This development is said to have rubbed Agarkar the wrong way.

On Wednesday, the Agarkar-headed committee named India’s ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming series against West Indies at home.

During Agarkar’s tenure, India ended their ICC trophy drought with a title triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was followed by the team winning the Champions Trophy in 2025 before successfully defending the T20 World Cup title earlier this year.
