Mumbai: A private school in Wadala has run into controversy after Yuva Sena, the student wing of Shiv Sena (UBT), complained to education authorities that the institution is illegally penalising students Rs 1,000 for each day of absence during Ganeshotsav after the five-day holiday.Yuva Sena’s Pradeep Sawant said, “There is no provision in any law which allows the school to fine students for missing school.”Expressing the grievances of families, a student’s parent shared, “Many families had travelled to their villages in Konkan for Ganesh festivities and their children returned one or two days late to school; for that, such a heavy fine is being imposed.”Following opposition from parents, a delegation of Yuva Sena leaders met education authorities and submitted a petition seeking an immediate halt to the fine collection and relief for the affected students and parents. Taking cognisance of the matter, officials have forwarded the matter for an inquiry and necessary action, but did not comment on the complaint.TOI tried reaching out to the school authorities but received no response.
