Who is Dhruv Rathee? Education, degrees, India protests and the citizenship controversy explained

by BollywoodNewsAndMovie

Dhruv Rathee began his YouTube journey by making travel videos. Today, he is one of India’s most recognised digital creators, known for explaining politics, history, current affairs and social issues to millions of viewers.

His videos often trigger public debate, attract criticism from political leaders and raise questions about the role of online creators in democracy.

But beyond his online popularity, Rathee’s educational background, participation in recent protests and citizenship controversy have brought him back into the headlines in October 2026.

Dhruv Rathee’s Educational Qualification: What Did He Study?

Rathee was born in Haryana, India on October 8, 1994. After completing his school he went to Germany for higher studies. According to his official website lists these three degrees:

  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering,
  • Masters in Energy from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Germany and,
  • Second Bachelors in Economics and Political Science.

His educational qualifications blend engineering, environmental science, economics and political science.

This mix is fit, for someone who explains policy, political changes and complex social topics. However, any degree does not fully explain his career. Rathee improved his communication and video-making by researching subjects, writing scripts and producing content for a growing audience.

How did Dhruv Rathee become a popular YouTuber ?

Rathee started uploading travel videos in 2014 while studying in Germany. His content later moved towards commentary with his first political video appearing in September 2016.

Over the time he began producing videos on elections, government policies, history, environmental concerns and viral claims.

Rathee’s youtube videos has explanations, graphics and examples which helped him reach viewers who wanted to understand complicated subjects without reading lengthy reports. In 2023, TIME included him in its Next Generation Leaders list. His rise also reflects a change in how young Indians consume information with YouTube and other digital platforms becoming important spaces for public discussion.

At the time Rathee’s political videos had attracted criticism. The supporters saw him as a creator who questions those in power while critics have accused him of presenting issues. However, his claims and interpretations, like those of any commentator, should be checked against reliable sources.

Why did Dhruv Rathee join the Bengaluru Protest in October 2026 ?

On October 8, 2026 Rathee went to a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. He was with Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders, actor activist Prakash Raj and other people.

The protest was arranged by groups that work for society like Citizens for Justice and Peace demanding resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of rolls.

Rathee said “the Election Commission was not being open and fair”. The protesters raised concerns about the electoral roll revision process and its possible impact on voters.

The protest got into trouble when Bhaskar Rao, a former police commissioner in Bengaluru and a leader from the BJP wrote to the Union Home Ministry asking them to seek verification of Rathee’s citizenship, immigration status and visa conditions.

Rao also questioned if a person he understood to be a German citizen could legally participate in an organised political protest in India? His letter sought an official examination; however, it did not establish that Rathee was a foreign national.

Is Dhruv Rathee a German citizen or an Indian citizen ?

If Dhruv Rathee is an Indian or German citizen? This question turned into one of the talking points after the Bengaluru protest. Rathee studied in Germany, and married a native woman named Juli. However, neither studying abroad nor marrying a foreign national automatically changes a person’s citizenship.

On October 11, Rathee cleared the air by posting a video on his social media handle showing his passport that he is an Indian citizen, and urged the demand for an official verification should not be mistaken for proof of foreign nationality.

This distinction matters because citizenship is a status, not something that can be reliably inferred from a person’s place of residence, education or family background.

Why was Dhruv Rathee detained before the Delhi Protest ?

The argument started on October 10 when Rathee was detained by the Delhi Police from his Gurugram house ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar that was organized by the CJP.

The planned protest was connected to worries about problems with the electoral roll irregularities and the list of people who are allowed to vote.

Police said they were denied permission for the protest because of safety and rules issues according to news reports.

However, Rathee was released later that day. On October 11 he said in a statement that what happened was a “kidnapping” and not just a detention. He said he was taken away without being given a reason. These are the claims he made; they are different from the fact that the police did take him into custody.

This incident brought up debate and discussions, about the right to protest the power of the police and how famous people who speak out against government groups are treated.

Rathee’s career shows how education can lead to opportunities beyond a conventional job. His engineering background did not stop him from building a career in communication, research and digital media. As the citizenship controversy and recent protests demonstrate, understanding public issues requires more than following viral posts. It requires asking questions, checking evidence and remaining open to facts that challenge one’s existing views.
