‘Look at yourself if you can’t defend 249’: Dinesh Karthik sounds alarm over India’s fielding crisis after Ranchi defeat to West Indies

India’s fielding has been slipping for months, and Dinesh Karthik believes the six-wicket defeat to West Indies in Ranchi has finally highlighted the problem. The former wicketkeeper has warned that the team must lift its standards in the field if it hopes to win major tournaments, and with the 2027 ODI World Cup drawing closer, the time available to fix the issue is shrinking fast.

India lost the second T20I against the Caribbean despite posting a formidable 249/5 on the back of Sanju Samson’s 82 off 41 balls. The visitors still chased the target down with nine balls to spare, as Shai Hope struck an unbeaten 102 off 45 deliveries and Sherfane Rutherford added 84 off 37 balls.

Karthik did not suggest the target was out of reach for a side with India’s resources, and he moved quickly to the real concern.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, he said: “No doubt, 249. If you start thinking it’s going to be a hard match, then you really need to look at yourself. But fielding has been an issue for some time now. Because we have won the ODI series and the Asian Games, it has gone a bit unnoticed.”

He then listed the occasions on which the fielding had fallen short, which stretched well beyond one bad night in Ranchi.

“But even in the final of the Asian Games, they didn’t field well. In England, they didn’t field well. In Ireland, they didn’t field well either. So, it has been an issue,” Karthik said.
