The West Bengal government has approved recruitment to 14,454 government posts and said the hiring process will be completed within the next six to eight months. The state Cabinet has also cleared a new scheme that will provide ₹50,000 in financial assistance to unmarried women pursuing higher education.The announcements were made by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari while briefing reporters at the state secretariat after a Cabinet meeting, PTI reports.The newly approved vacancies will be filled through the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the State Police Recruitment Board. The posts will be spread across departments including forests, fire services, prisons, home and hill affairs.“We had promised to provide one lakh government jobs in the state, and we are moving towards that goal,” Adhikari said, according to PTI.He said the PSC is working at full strength to complete pending recruitment processes.

14,454 posts to be filled in six to eight months

The state government has set a six to eight-month timeline for completing the recruitment process for the newly approved vacancies.Adhikari said the PSC and the State Police Recruitment Board would handle the examination and appointment process for the posts.He also accused the previous Trinamool Congress government of failing to complete recruitment processes, citing issues related to Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates and administrative delays.“During the previous Trinamool government, young people were deprived of jobs due to complications over OBC certificates and administrative failures,” he said, according to PTI.On police recruitment, Adhikari said appointment-related formalities for around 12,000 posts would begin on October 11. Around 5,000 candidates are expected to receive appointment letters at a programme on the same day.

₹50,000 assistance for unmarried women

The Cabinet has also approved the Bhagini Nibedita Scheme, under which unmarried women pursuing higher education will receive financial assistance of ₹50,000 over three years.The scheme is scheduled to be implemented from January next year.Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive ₹17,000 each in the first and second years. They will receive another ₹16,000 in the third year. The total assistance will therefore come to ₹50,000.The move is aimed at providing financial support to unmarried women continuing their higher education.

Karmabandhu remuneration raised to ₹8,000

The government has also increased the monthly remuneration of Karmabandhus, or part-time contractual sanitation workers working under the land and land revenue department.Their monthly remuneration has been increased from ₹5,000 to ₹8,000 with effect from this month.The Cabinet has also approved an increase in the monthly food allowance for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students staying in government hostels.The allowance has been raised from ₹1,800 to ₹3,300 per month.The state government will also launch the emergency response number 112 for the state police on October 10, coinciding with Mahalaya.As part of the launch, 400 vehicles and 450 motorcycles will be handed over to various police stations at a programme at Brigade Parade Ground.The recruitment announcements and welfare measures come alongside the state government’s plans to expand staffing and police infrastructure.(with PTI inputs)
